Printable Cake Cutting Guide

Cutting a cake can be tricky business. You need to ensure there’s enough for everyone, but you also don’t want any wasteful cakes going to waste.

This printable cake-cutting guide can take the guesswork out of serving guests the right amount of cake. Perfect for bakeries, cake makers, and decorators!

How to Cut a Heart-Shaped Cake

An easy heart-shaped cake makes the ideal treat to celebrate Valentine’s Day or your love! No need for special pans; even you can do it!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and prepare two 8-inch square cake pans by lining them with parchment paper and spraying them with nonstick cooking spray. Create your favorite cake batter according to recipe instructions, dividing evenly among both pans so they contain roughly equal amounts. Bake as directed and allow cakes to cool completely before taking them out of their molds.

Once the cakes have completely cooled, remove their parchment papers. With an angled spatula, use small swipes to push any frosting that accumulates around the edges inwards, creating sharp edges while clearing away excess crumbs. Crumb-coat the entire cake in a thin layer of buttercream, then refrigerate to allow the frosting to set correctly.

As soon as you’re ready to cut, place the round cake in front of the square one. Take smaller curved pieces from the round cake and arrange them above the square in order to complete the shape of a heart. Secure them using buttercream before adding another layer and another curved piece to top it all. Use more buttercream if necessary to adhere them securely before frosting your masterpiece to complete its masterpiece look.

Fill any gaps between the pieces with more icing to even them out, then pipe a message on top with your Wilton 10 using its lightest bag of frosting – I wrote “love you,” but feel free to customize it according to your heart!

If you’re using a heart-shaped cupcake pan, be sure to cut out foil templates ahead of time using scissors. To create one, cut out a four-inch wide strip of aluminum foil that measures exactly four inches across and the same width as your cupcake liners before folding and ripping it into 1-inch pieces like hot dogs for easy placement on each cupcake before pouring on sprinkles – remove before frosting the next cupcake to prevent clumps of sprays!
