Oklahoma Sooners Football Team
The Oklahoma Sooners football team represents the University of Oklahoma in the Big 12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Big 12 Conference is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCA.
2009
The 2009 Oklahoma Sooners football team is a charter member of the Big 12 Conference. As such, they played their home games at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. They finished the regular season with a 7-5 record and tied for third place in the conference’s South Division. Nevertheless, the Sooners made their presence felt in the post-season as well, finishing in the top eight of the Sun Bowl.
2008
Oklahoma has been one of the most dominant teams in college football over the past decade. They have won the Big 12 conference championship three consecutive years and they finished in the top five in the nation in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. In 2008, they had a recruiting class that was ranked in the top six in the nation. It consisted of 21 commitments, including a number of super stars and busts.
2010
The University of Oklahoma’s football program will make its second trek to Cincinnati in the near future. The Tigers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals in a tilt that is expected to prove interesting. A victory will set the tempo for the rest of the season. There will also be a conference championship in the offing in the form of the Big 12 conference.
2011
The 2011 Oklahoma football season started with high hopes. A return to the Big 12 for Mike Stoops and a new starting quarterback in Justin Blackmon had fans pumped. However, the Sooners failed to live up to the expectations. It was a year of injuries, poor execution and insurmountable losses.
The OU defense was a good unit in 2011, but it wasn’t enough. Despite the good play, the Sooners lost two of their last three games. And their losses were primarily on the offensive side of the ball.
2012
It’s been a few years since the Oklahoma Sooners last hoisted a championship flag, but the football gods have blessed this aspiring scout with a slew of talented seniors, such as quarterback Bubba Watson and running back Quentin Griffin. As a result, the red squad has a chance to prove its worth on the field as it competes in the Big 12 conference, a storied rival of the Pac-12.
2013
The Oklahoma Sooners have announced their 2013 college football schedule. Their home games will be played at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. After the dust settles, they will play the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Bedlam Series. They will also play at least one home game against the West Virginia Mountaineers in their own little state of the art conference. In the upcoming season, they will play six conference games.
2014
There were some impressive statistics aplenty from Oklahoma’s 2014 season, but the Tigers can’t seem to put it all together. Despite the talent on display, it’s not hard to understand why the Sooners finished with a 6-5 record. The biggest question marks are quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Jordan Ta’amu, who are both underwhelming and uncharacteristically sloppy.
In short, the 2014 Oklahoma football season will be a slog for fans and media alike. However, there is hope afoot. This year, the favored Cowboys are not the only haughty rival, as Texas and Texas Tech are also in the hunt.
2015
Oklahoma football in 2015 was a season of transition. In the end, Oklahoma won the Big 12 Conference title and got a spot in the College Football Playoffs. However, Oklahoma’s defense was ranked outside the top 50 in total defense.
It was the third time in Bob Stoops’ tenure that the Sooners were unable to win 10 games. The team also suffered a loss in the Red River Showdown and lost to Kansas State.
2016
The University of Oklahoma’s 2016 football season will go down in the books as one of the most successful in OU’s storied history. Despite the loss of two marquee recruits, the Sooners still managed to post the highest winning percentage in the Big 12 (no disrespect to the Raiders but that’s another story). After a rough start, the Sooners clinched the conference title with a win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
2017
Oklahoma football is one of the most-followed athletic programs in the state. Last season the Sooners finished 12-2 and were two-time defending Big 12 champions. The program has a strong history and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most-followed college athletic programs in the nation.
This season the Sooners have an exciting new coach at the helm. Bob Stoops has announced that he will retire after the season, and Lincoln Riley has taken over as the new head coach. In addition, four freshmen have been enrolled on campus. There are a few questions regarding the defense, however. For starters, the coaching staff has yet to finalize a defensive alignment, and it’s unclear how much playing time the players will receive.
