How to Fix a Leaking Bathtub Faucet
If your bathtub faucet leaks, you must fix it before it worsens. Here are a few steps to improve the tap and keep it running smoothly.
Replace the stem or cartridge
If your bathtub faucet has begun to leak, it may be time to replace the stem or cartridge. There are a few ways to accomplish this. Using the correct tools and understanding the parts can help you finish the job.
First, you will need to find the main water valve. Then, you will need to identify the model number, cut-off valves, and faucet handles. If unsure which part is malfunctioning, you can ask your local plumbing store to help you.
Once you know the part you need, you will need to remove the handle. This is usually easy, but you might need a unique tool to pull it off. For angled handles, you might need a 1/8-inch Allen wrench. This will help you to loosen the nut.
The retaining clip is a brass pin that holds the cartridge in place. You will need to remove this before you can remove the cartridge. If you have a two-handle faucet, you might need a special wrench to do the job.
Remove the escutcheon
If you have a leaky bathtub faucet, you may have to remove the escutcheon to fix it. The escutcheon is the flat plate that covers the faucet handle. It typically has screws that hold it to the wall. However, it can be attached to the faucet by a decorative cover. If the escutcheon is stuck to the wall, you can try to loosen it with a jar gripper or flat-head screwdriver.
You’ll need to remove the valve stem and handle to replace the escutcheon. You’ll also need to replace the O-ring on the outside of the valve stem. If the O-ring is old and corroded, you may also have to remove the cartridge from the valve stem.
You’ll need a specialty tub socket wrench to replace the valve stem. In addition, you’ll need to turn the water off before removing it. This is so you don’t mess up the plumbing.
After you have removed the valve stem and the handle, you’ll need to replace the O-ring. This can be done with your hands or with pliers. You’ll also need to put the plumber’s tape over the threads to prevent leaks.
Remove the handle
If you have a cracked or rusted bathtub faucet handle, it is necessary to replace it before water continues to flow. Getting a replacement handle is easy, but removing the old one is essential.
Before you start, make sure that you turn off your main water supply. The valve to turn off the water should be right below the faucet. If the handle is stuck, calcium and magnesium may have adhered to the faucet. This can cause the handle to be challenging to remove.
Before you replace your faucet, you will want to take a picture. This will help you explain the problem to your plumber. You may also consider buying a unique tool to fix your bathtub.
If you do not know how to fix your faucet, you can take it to a hardware store for assistance. Many stores will sell you a stem and handle kit. This includes new handles, stems, and washers.
Install the spout
If your tub faucet is not working correctly, you must replace the spout. The spout is the part that goes over the pipe and secures it to the wall. You can get replacement spouts at hardware stores. First, however, you should know how to install the faucet.
If you are unsure how to install the spout, you can ask a friend. It is also possible to purchase a tap from a local home center. This will provide you with a replacement spout compatible with your old faucet.
First, you need to prepare your tools. You can buy a socket wrench at your local hardware store. You can also use a hex or Allen wrench.
Then, you need to find the set screw. This screw usually is on the bottom of the spout close to the wall. Again, you can use a flashlight to help you locate it. If you have trouble finding the screw, you may need a flat-head or Phillips-head screwdriver.
