Badmaash Company is an animated movie that perfectly captures the carefree attitude of the 1990’s, even down to its director admitting referencing movies from that era while creating characters for this project.
Parmeet Sethi has undoubtedly succeeded with his directorial debut. Shahid and Anushka shine, continuing their stellar performances from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Additionally, Vir Das and Meiyang Chang deliver impressive performances.
Badmaash Company is an entertaining crime comedy set in 1990s Bombay. The plot revolves around four ordinary middle-class Bombay youths, Karan (Shahid Kapoor), Bulbul (Anushka Sharma), Zing (Meiyang Chang), and Chandu (Vir Das), who come together to start an import business despite all the risks involved and their large-scale schemes to do so.
This movie is enjoyable to watch, thanks to entertaining one-liners, great acting performances, and excellent music. Anushka steals the show; Shahid stands up well; Meiyang Chang and Vir Das also give strong performances, but what really stands out is director Parmeet Sethi’s exceptional script that drives this film forward.
However, this movie suffers from an overextended morality play and a predictable plot. Karan’s decline into darkness is not convincingly charted, while Shahid’s boyish behavior – such as crossing fingers every time he hopes for positive outcomes – can be challenging to buy as an adult. Furthermore, characters all appear like they never experienced terrible hair days, something which doesn’t help matters either. Still, it does contain plenty of spirit, which makes for an enjoyable watch.
